I just received three bottles of ARX and will be using it in my 2000 BMW 540i with 176,000 miles. Now I know that BMW recommends synthetic, but I also know that ARX works best with conventional motor oils. As can be guessed I have no warranty issues.

I used the Castrol Oil Lube selector on thier website and they listed several compatible oils for my car - all 5w-30. So I would like to use 5w-30 Castrol GTX for all phases if possible, since it is priced well below synthetic oils at $10.17/5Qt bottle at Walmart.

My question is given the short oil change intervals during ARX treatments there should be nothing to worry about in using Castrol GTX, am I correct?

If Castrol GTX cannot be used, then I may end up using 5w-30 Walmart synthetic which costs $13.84/5Qt bottle.

How does my plan sound?

Thanks in advance.

You are. Castrol GTX has a good reputation.

You'll do well with the GTX, I used it for both phases in my truck. Also, considering the short runs, I agree conventional will be just fine. Good luck!

Your plan sounds perfect, before running Auto-Rx I had always used synthetic oil, I followed Frank's instructions and ran dino oil for the clean and rinse phases because I was told that this would work best with Auto-Rx and it did. I remember to the best of my knowledge that using synthetic oil with Auto-Rx especially during the rinse phase is not as beneficial, something like a polarizing affect, someone can correct me if I am wrong , but if I remember correctly the crud will not rinse off as well with synthetic oil, maybe Frank can chime in for the exact reasoning.

Q: Why do you recommend non-synthetic oil for the rinse" phase of the application?
A: We recommend simple, non-synthetic oil (do not use-semi synthetic or high-mileage oil) for this important step in the Auto-Rx® Application. Synthetic oil has a complex additive package that polarizes the liquefied debris on the engines internal oil-lubricated parts. The goal is to rinse all the internal parts of this liquefied debris, and a good ?Dino Oil?, with its simple additive package, does the job very well.

Thanks for all the replies. I have commenced the application of ARX and all seems to be going smoothly. I intend to use the treatment to play with various viscosities of GTX, but the 5w-30 seems to be working well.

Once, I complete two treatments I will give German Castrol (GC) 0w-30 a try.

Best Regards,

Cosmo

Auto-Rx will drive synthetic esters in German Castrol to the filter. Auto-Rx looks at these as contaminants.

I think he was going to the Castrol Syntec after his ARX treatment was complete - so no worries!
