Since I will be ordering auto-rx in pretty soon there was a question I had regarding the application of the basic vs heavy sludge. The only difference I noticed was that in with the heavy sludge applicatoin the oil filter should be changed 1250miles So here is the question. Since I do not know the condition of my motor, and do not have the ability to take of the valve cover like so many people. Would it be ok to just follow the "basic instructions" What would happen if oil filter is not changed at 1250mile? Would it be harmful to the motor in anway? sorry for all the questions, Thanks again.
Sorry, I should have given more info on the motor, the car is a 1995 Lexus Gs300 with approx 162k miles , 2jge motor which are known for having sludge buildup. As far as the history goes, When i purchased it , the car had around 136k miles and from that point on i have been doing all the oil changes on time, 3-4k intervals. The motor does run smooth, no leaks whatsoever. Hope this helps, thanks again.
Were you planning on opening up you oil filters after each oil change? That is one way to tell if you have a lot of contaminate to work through. Another would be to check for liquid sludge in your drain pan.
Don't forget to replace you PCV valve on a regular basis.
Neither actually, I dont have the technical know how to do either. If the motor did have alot of sludge lets say and I were to add auto rx for 2500miles, could this damage the motor?
I guess my question is for the average person who does not know alot about cars and the implications of running auto-rx in a motor that has sludge in it without changing the oil filter after running auto-rx for 1250miles into the oil change.
Thanks for the response. Since auto-rx is advertised as a product that anyone can use, my question again is this, here is a scenario
An elderly lady who drives a 1992 cadillac deville with over 200k miles , wants to use auto-rx for her car. Since she obvioulsy will not be able to change the oil filter half way thorugh the auto-rx course, she runs auto rx for the reccomended 2500miles as stated in the "basic application" . Not knowing weather the car has heavy sludge or not , what would the implications of using the "basic application" instructions for a motor with heavy sludge.?
I would think you'd be okay on all but the most seriously sludged vehicles. Do you have no way of knowing for sure? If you say your engine sounds fine and runs good, with no smoke and good mpg, chances are you aren't sludged up to the point where it would kill you. Changing the filter early is extra insurance.
I agree, I have no problems with changing out the filter at 1250 miles, I was looking at it from a marketing perspective. So in a worse case scenario where one is unable to change the filter at 1250miles and the motor is sludged up, shouldn't there be a different set of instructions? I was thinking something along the lines of this
Heavy sludge instructions for those who are unable to change their filter at 1250miles 1. Add 12oz of auto-rx with new oil change
2. Drive 1500 miles, change oil and filter
3. Rinse phase of 2500miles
Repeat.
I think something like this woud make auto-rx even more marketable and easier to use for those arent auto savvy.
