I've got a '89 Honda lawn tractor and I want to use some ARX in but I'm not sure of the dosage. The crankcase holds 1.50 qts. I'm guessing 1 oz will do but I'm guessing.
If you are looking to do an initial cleaning I would suggest running 3 fluid ounces. The duration of the cleaning dose may depend on where or not you have a pressurised oiling system with a spin on filter like a car. I am not sure what honda has designed for their oiling system. For example my JDeere tractor has a single cylinder motor with a spin on filter. Other tractors or small push type mowers may have a non pressurized, splash system for distributing oil, like a Briggs & Stratton motor.
In the pressurized oiling system with filtration I would run the 3 oz. for approximately 10 hours of operation. In a non filtered system I would run only about 4-5 hours of operation before dumping the cleaning dose.
Once cleaned:
In the case of my push mower that has been in service since 1994, I always run an ounce in the 1 quart system, call it a maintenance dose if you will. This is a B&S Quantum motor with a splash system. This motor runs exceptionally well with the ounce of ARX in at all times. Without the ounce in there. it is much more difficult to start and smokes at cold start. With the ounce it usually cranks on the first pull, with very little smoke.
On the John Deere Tractor I have approximately 330 hours of recorded service. I have always changed oil and filter every 25 hours of operation. The oil always drained in what appeared to be good shape, hardly discolored even. Last year I put 4 ounces of ARX into my 2 quart system and the oil was black within 10 hours of operation.
At the end of the day, my oberservations say that ARX is must for four cycle lawn equipment.
I live in the Tampa Bay area and have about 1 acre of lawn. My tractor sees about 65 hours of service yearly, that is mowing twice per week during half of the year and one per week the other half. I hope this helps you put together a more accurate guess in terms of what 25 hours is based on your mowing frequency and climate.
I have a JD L111 riding lawnmower with a 22 HP B&S twin cylinder. It currently has 132 hours with 12 hours on the current fill of PP 5W30 (2.2 qts) and an oversized WIX spin on oil filter. I had to have a cylinder head replaced last year because an exhaust valve shattered last summer. The mower had 120 hours at the time. The JD service tech said he had never seen this happen before. Anyways, I'd like to do a clean phase with ARX, and then a flush with dino 10W30 (similar to the car engine procedure). I plan to continue with the maintenance dose after the flush phase. Any ideas on whether to wait a little longer for the new cylinder head to break in? Or just start the clean phase right now. It sounds like the consensus would be 3 ozs of ARX for the clean phase, and 1 oz for the maintenance dose. Does that sound about right for this application? Thanks for your help.
How many hours use must one sue the tractor with Auto-Rx cleaning phase before chaning the oil filter? After that how long before the oil change hours wise?
