Questions about application
Permalink

Hey guys,

I just added 6 ounces to my automatic transmission in my 92 Geo Storm. I just purchased this vehicle as a way to save gas on my commutes around town. I have a drain plug on the transmission so can I just drain the fluid out instead of using a Ttec machine? Also, does the filter not need to be changed? The application gives that as an option for the do-it- yourselfers but it doesn't say that it is a neccesity.

My concern would be that I dislodge so much material during the 1000 mile cycle that the filter would be clogged. I don't know if the 92 storm has a metal screen filter that is backflushed after each drive or if it is a felt filter that would restrict from a clean cycle.

If it is a metal screen filter like I have on my Turbo 350 you will be fine, after doing Auto-Rx in my trans, I dropped the pan and there was nothing in my trans filter, Auto-Rx did such a good job that everything was liquified, I would change the filter after doing Auto-Rx to be on the safe side, I do not know what too tell you about the felt type filters.

I wonder how I could find out if I have a screen filter or a felt filter without tearing into the trans? I have tried to google it but come up empty handed

A couple of thoughts, maybe calling the dealer or a transmission shop in your area, the only other thing I can think of is if you have a junk yard in your area, now my 04 Marauder that I got a replacement trans filter for had the felt type whereas on my 83 El Camino it had the screen type, I personally think the screen type flows better and will not clog as easy as the felt type, I once had the felt type on the El Camino and did not like the shifting with that type of filter after a while, I am wondering if a felt type would clog up with hte liquified junk in the trans or flow just as easy with a screen type, I will have to investigate this matter.

You can find a photo of the part if you do a search on AutoZone's website. It's a filter, not a screen.

Did you find an actual picture Turbo? When I went to the autozone website, I was unable to locate a replacement filter in their inventory.

However, I have a new question. After about 120 miles into the application, my transfluid is dark and dirty. It almost looks like motor oil now and has lost all red color and it completely brown now. Should I dump early or keep going at it? Is it normal for the fluid to get that dirty that fast and when should I play it safe and dump the fluid?

Here is a novel idea how about following the application? When we say 1000 miles that did not come from some guy in Pittsburg whose expertise consists of reading Popular Mechanics.

We don,t advise posting the same question on other message boards regarding Auto-Rx, this tech board is run by guys who have expertise or they would not answer yours or anyone elses post.

Spend the $90.00 on T-Tec they not only clean your transmission-torque converter-filter -unit they refill with brand new fluid.

Really reading the application and the transmission posts should put you in a comfort zone. reading some Auto-Rx posts on other message boards are so convuluded no wonder they don,t get it right, funny thing when i investigate where they got the information from it was good old Joe (his cousin used Auto-Rx now he is an expert) Auto-Rx works if you work it, it does take some ability as it is not a .$.98 cent can of paint thinner
you throw in your oil and pray.

Last I checked it gave us the option of doing a t-tec, which some of us have had bad experiences with or can not get done locally, or drain the fluid themselves. I opted for the latter and am trying to get questions answered regarding an unforeseen circumstance: My transmission fluid is as black as old motor oil. Should I abort the clean or let it ride?
I have read all through the transmission board and did not find any mention of a transmission with so much dislodged crud in it as mine. I feel that it is a legitimate concern and would like an expert to give me an idea as to what I should do and expect with a transmission that showed such a drastic shift in particle content.

Reishi, I think possibly what everyone is missing from your first post is that you have a manual transmission. Unless you have cooling lines going to a radiator and use automatic transmission fluid in your manual transmission then you might be able to do a T Tec. As far as I know and that isn't much, but manual transmissions don't usually have torque converters. You should check your owner's manual and see what type of fluid or gear lube is used in it. If just oil or gear lube then I would imagine you just drain out the old and fill with new whatever it is.

I too am foregoing the use of the T-Tec apparatus, but this is on my '07 with very low miles and using the Auto-Rx maintenance dose.

It sounds like the Auto-Rx is really cleaning out your decade & 1/2+ year old tranny.  With multiple flushes, Auto-Rx treatment, and a filter change, you should be able to remove the majority of that crud.  It will take longer this way, as you can't get enough of the fluid out with just a drain.

I could only flush about half of my tranny fluid out, and I was using ramps to angle the car toward the tranny drain hole.

You got a great MPG car btw!

-I missed the point that this was a manual tranny weirdface

I apologize, I was in a hurry and your manual transmission went right by me. Dump fluid and refill with new oil and Auto-Rx. Manual transmissions use gear oil and Auto-Rx should be applied at the rate of 2 ounces per quart of oil.
It's an embarrassment to yourself and others for me to act so unprofessional. We face a major task here ,(need more monitors) trying to change this board to be technical ,not topical. If anybody reading this post would like to become a monitor and can give the board some reasonable time, please e-mail me at auto_rx @bellsouth.net

Afew comments about T-Tec: This machinery regulates the pressure it uses in cleaning a transmission so there need not to be a fear of causing a leak. It cleans the most important part ,torque converter, it cleans all.

I apologize too. It was just a long night and it turned into a crumby day pretty fast. I didn't mean to get snappy with you, Frank, I was just really concerned about my transmission. I have never seen tranny fluid get this dark this fast. But I am pretty sure it is the original fluid as the previous owner didn't appear to care much for maintenance.

I have complete faith that Auto-rx works. No questions asked, I am just wondering if a color change like I have experienced is normal. Again, it has gone from dirty red to almost black within 100 miles. Should I let it ride? It seems to be shifting like normal so it may very well be perfectly fine. But like other enthusiast would probably understand, my skin went pitch-white when I checked the fluid and noticed it was so dark.

I will definitely be saving the fluid in a mason jar so I can post pictures aver here. If nothing else, it is a true testament to how deep of a cleaner Ax really is.

Also, I don't know if he has the time or even wants to do it but I nominate Brent Olsen to help monitor the boards. Through PM's and phone conversations, I have come to admire Brent's professional demeanor and honesty. I think the boards would be a better place with him helping out.

Reishi - Please don't drive with black A.T.F. in it, have the fluid change again by T-Tech with new filter (if there is one) and new A.T.F., pour Auto-RX drive to 1,000 miles.

I know a friend's friend car went to this garage who said they also do Auto-Trans Fluid change, they didn't, they poured some addivites in it to boost the life of the A.T.F. and yes it went black within few hundred miles, I stopped them to go any further and told where to go where I take mine, now they are happy as Larry!

Usually if the new A.T.F. have gone black sooner as it should be, it's may be to due with the Clutches are worn away, remember Auto-RX can't repair any moving parts, but deep
cleaning them.

You could have them checked out and that would may cost you Larbour charge just to have it look at and they would replace it after they have spoken to you, or try to do the T-Tech again with new Filter & new A.T.F. then pour Auto-RX in it, drive to 1,000 miles and keep your eyes on the level & colour, if it's has gone black again with 500 miles or so, have the T-Tech service again and again until it's not gone black at 1,000 miles.

Maybe the others on here would thinks different from my views.
HTH.

If it is that black it may have never been changed or have so much junk in the transmission that it is having a hard time for the trans cooler to do any cooling,I agree with ForeverFord this transmission maybe in trouble if the color of the fluid is black it is quite possible that the fluid has gotten very hot and that is not good for the internals of the transmission.

Well, I ended up keeping the fluid in there for the entire 1000 miles. I just drained and filled the trans ( all 5 quarts of it) with fresh ATF and I will run a few hundred miles and flush it again in order to get the rest of the debris out. I will post pictures to show you guys what I was talking about. I wish I would have taken a little fluid out before I added the ARx to demonstrate the drastic change in colour that occurred over the first 300 miles or so. I am not kidding when I say it went from dirty ATF fluid to Filthy ATF real fast. Just another testimonial to the awesome POWER of ARx
