Hello, here is my situation

I have a 2005 toyota tacoma, 4 cylinder, with 60,000 miles.  About 6-7 thousand miles ago I got a bad rattle in my engine between 1500-2500 rpms.  It sounds like a valve and the faster the rpm's the faster the sound.  I have used better octain gas, different oil, chevron techron gas additive, marvel mystery oil with the gas, etc...and nothing seems to have helped.

The last oil change I used pennzoil platinum hoping that it would do something about the valve noise but it hasn't helped.  I have around 500 miles on that oil change.  So my question is this...can I used Auto-RX with pennzoil platinum or should I wait until my next oil change and use a conventional?

Thanks for your help.

You can use Pennzoil Platinum which is a Group III oil and not really a synthetic oil, meaning it is hydrocracked, I would put in the Auto-Rx NOW and for the rinse phase I would use the cheapest dino oil you can get. You probably have some junk in your engine that is not letting the oil get to your valves, Auto-Rx over time will clear this up. I am sorry to say that in my opinion Marvel Mystery Oil is old school even though some may disagree I am still calling it old school like putting ATF in your oil to clean your engine. The other thing I would do is change your PCV and make sure any PCV hoses are clear of any junk. Remember motor oil does 2 things, it lubricates parts and cools parts too, motor oil is not a cleaner. Your issues sound like something Auto-Rx can cure. Are you the original owner or did you buy the car used, and if you bought it used how many miles were on it when you got the car. I had the same type of valve noise but it was a ticking sound that eventually went away during the rinse phase, so do not be surprised if the noise does not go away after a few miles of using Auto-Rx, everything happens during the Rinse Phase when all of the junk or liquified junk goes to your oil filter. During the rinse phase you may need to change your oil filter half way through the process, my guess is that you have crud in your lifters, but this is just a guess, Auto-Rx worked for me and it can work for you too, good luck, and keep us posted.

I bought it new. I change the oil religiously every 3,000 miles. I just ordered a bottle and will put it in as soon as it arrives.

I use it around 2,500 miles, then change the oil using a conventional oil and good filter..is that correct?

thanks for your help. I hope this helps, I would hate to have engine trouble...can't really afford it

Yes, but as far as the oil filter goes use a cheap one like the Wal-Mart Super Tech oil filter, stay away from Fram, you want a cheap oil filter because some of the more expensive ones have more pleats and can clog up easier, believe me I know. Just make sure you use whatever weight oil is specified in your owner's manual, out of curiosity what other brand oil's have you used and how many times have you changed your PCV.

Automotive 101, you can also Google PCV, it stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation, what it does is take unburnt gases and introduces it into the engine to get reburned, if it gets clogged you can have a few things happen, oil leaks from seals because of too much pressure and deposits forming in your engine, it sounds like this has never been changed, I would get a new 1 as it is cheap insurance and will keep your engine from building up more junk inside.

Brent is right on about the PCV. They are rarely more than 2 dollars so I would definitely swap it out.
