Any help would be appreciated. We have a 2002 Dodge Durange, 2WD, 4.7L. Our first experience with the oil pick up(Sludge), was 3 years ago. A nice mechanic actually took our Oil Pan off, cleand it out, flush the oil, cleaned the screen. It worked great, for about 1.5 years, and then it happend again. Oil Pressure dropped, started hearing the clicking. We found another nice repair shop that did not charge as much, asked them to do the same thing, and they did. Works great, mind you we do regular oil changes. The repair shop moved. So my husband is going to try to take the pan off, clean it, flush the bad oil, clean the screen. Will Auto-RX help fix the current problem or is it a preventive for after the fix? Sorry this post is so long but I would love any feed back.
Having a clean oil pump screen would be the preferable starting point for dealing with this on-going sludge issue. Most of us don't do that however because our oil pans are so difficult to get at and remove.
Auto-Rx works slowly to disolve sludge and contaminent build up. Because sludge had been an on-going issue I would recommend you follow the Sludge Application ( http://www.auto-rx.com/pages/heavy_sludge_app.html ) and afterwards consider going on the Maintenance Plan.
There are many factors that cause sludge, one of which is a clogged PCV system. I would replace the PCV valve on a regular basis and check that all the lines are clear of contaminent obstructions.
With this vehicle I would change the PCV out every year, it is cheap insurance and the cost of a PCV which may be $10.00 or so is going to eliminate a lot of future problems. How many miles are on this vehicle right now.
I would recommend that since you have a sludge issue that after a Clean and Rinse you go on the Maintenance Dose. What kind of oil are you using and does this car see short trips meaning 5 miles or less. There are many factors that can lead to sludge, are you the original owner of this vehicle and have you ever used any other oil additives in this engine.
The reason I ask these questions is because we may be able to prevent you from having these problems in the future. If your owner's manual says to change the PCV at 100,000 miles I would not go by that recomendation.
I have a 1983 Chevrolet El Camino with 365,000 miles that I have changed the PCV every year and I have never had any problems with sludge.
