Okay, I've had ARX in the crankcase with Syntec 5W40 for 600 miles now and everything seems fine but additional reading seems to indicate one of the big problems this motor experiences is a sludging in the PCV system (which is complex and expensive to service). So will ARX help restore this or should I look into having the PCV, hoses and such replaced??
The car isn't to my knowledge, badly sludged. M1 EP OCIs of 5K from day one. Car has 122K miles on it.
If the PCV has not been changed in a while, it might be a good idea to put a new 1 on, you can check the hoses and if they are clear you should be fine there.
Our you doing a sludge application using Auto-Rx ? if so finish the complete application than see how your engine is. You don,t want to waste money on a PCV Valve which will get plenty of contaminante from your Auto-Rx Application . Will Auto-Rx clean the PCV Valve I honestly don,t know however now is not the time to change it.
That's a good point Frank! Thanks for bringing it up. I wasn't really thinking of changing it out right now, just poking around to begin to get an idea of what will be involved. My impression, from reading I've been doing is it's pretty odd compared to most PCV systems found in other cars and may well be beyond my ability level.
I will definitely wait until the rinse cycle is through before doing the job (if, at that point, it's needed)
ARX is not going to be able to clean out your PCV system, this is something you will have to do yourself. The PCV system in the turbocharged 1.8T engine consists of several check valves, one hard to reach PCV valve and lots of interconnecting hoses. Since you don't think you have a sludge problem right now I'd wait for warmer weather to tackle the project.
