Recently bought a 2000 323i and while replacing the valve cover gasket notice a lot of sludge. Was reading over your site and would like to use ARX to try to clean it up. What type oil should I use for the differant stages? BMW says use synthetic oil and I was jsut doing an oil change so I have not refilled the oil yet. I bought Mobil 1 0W-30 to refill with. Will this be OK to use during the cleaning phase? Or should I refill with something differant? What should I use during the flush stage? Would one treatment be enough or should I do back to back ones?
Hello glad you joined and posted. Go to www.auto-rx.com click on applications and print out the one for "SLUDGE" make sure to read the FAQ.
In the FAQ you will find why we suggest a non synthetic oil for both the cleaning and rinsing stages. Please read the Auto-Rx Maintenance Program. You might think this is a lot to read. Realize that sludge is never ending and Auto-Rx is your best method of controlling it and giving your engine new life.
Would like to suggest Castrol GTX Group 111 Oil for the complete Auto-Rx Application. You CAN USE your existing oil for first cleaning application of Auto-Rx (than go to Castrol GTX) save the Mobil tilll your done.
You need 3 bottles of Auto-Rx (2 for back to back cleaning & rinsing) and the third for the maintenance dose every oil change.
thanks for the info, I read through the site info and wanted to see what type and weight oil I should use to replace the 0W-40 Mobil 1 during the process?
No it cannot be purchased in auto parts stores go to the web page and and you can order. This is only place it can be purchased. http://www.auto-rx.com/
If you must stay with synthetic oil, get some Castrol Syntec 5W-30 or Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 for clean and rinse cycles. These are both primarily group III based synthetic oils and will help you get a decent cleanup with Auto-Rx.
Mobil 0W-30 and 0W-40 probably both use significant amounts of either PAO (group IV) or esters (group V) which are not ideal to have in your oil for an effective rinse cycle. Like Frank said, save it for when you have finished 2 complete clean/rinse cycles, then add 4 oz of Auto-Rx to each subsequent oil change for a maintenance dose to keep things really clean and do some additional cleaning.
So better to stay with either non-synthetic oil or a group III-based synthetic oil for optimum results. This is especialy important during the "rinse" part of the Auto-rx application.
Castrol GTX 5W-30 is a non-synthetic oil and is a group II or II+ based oil that works well with Auto-Rx. If you were to use some 5W-30 GTX for the specified mileages for cleaning and rinsing in your engine, you would be fine. In the summer during Auto-Rx treatment, I would use a 10W-30 or some 10W-30 mixed with some GTX 10W-40 in your engine during the treatment process.
You need to use oil that meets ACEA A3,B3 and LL01. M1 0W30 doesn't. For RX use get a Group III oil like Pennzoil Platinum Euro formula 5W40. M1 0W40 OK to use after clean/rinse completed.
The 0w40 M1 will be fine, its a group 3 oil. Its what i'm currently using in my 2nd clean phase in my 1.8t A4. Got it when it was on sale for 5 qts + M1 filter for $30.
