I bought a used Audi and have been dead on with changing the oil with 5w-40 full syn oil and now at 106K miles I have a severe sludge problem. I ordered Auto-RX, but my question is...can I really run it with 5w-30 dino oil? I just feel weird about it, know how critical 5w-40 and 0w-40 syn oil is to this engine.
Please go to www.auto-rx.com and read the FAQ and print out application for sludge. Synthetic oil in this engine is a major problem in rinsing the contaminants impregnated with Auto-Rx off the internals.
Auto-Rx & Castrol GTX make a great team and you can feel a lot better about the performance and life of your engine than you can imagine right now.
Running a conventional oil for the short "clean" and "rinse" cycles isn't going to cause a problem in this engine. Suggest you service your PCV system as it's likely clogged and the reason you're dealing with sludge now.
After you've done a ARX treatment or two (following the sludge application) I would stick with VW approved oils for this engine, and run them for no longer than 5,000 miles. For a little extra protection add 3-4 oz. of ARX at each oil change.
The only oils approved by VW / Audi for this engine are synthetic.
Thank you for all the responses. I take very good care of my 2003 Audi, oil changes every 5K with 5w-40 full-syn syntec oil, mobile 1 oil filter. I bought the car with 50K on it and I didn't see any sludge, but I didn't remove the valve cover either...big mistake...according to Audi since the sludge started in there, even after being perfect on my oil changes, it's going to get worse...sounds like bs to me. The car also has 107K on it, and audi said they would have fixed it if it was under 105K as stated in the warranty. I love the car, but I hate Audi. Dealership wants $2200 to clean the oil pan, pick up tubes, and check the turbo..RIP OFF!
Check the PCV, as was suggested. Use something like Rotella T 5w-40 if you insist on a synthetic while using Auto-Rx. It's well suited for Euro-alloy usage regardless of the lack of Audi/VW 50x.xx numbers. It just won't jump through all the extended hoops, w/the alleged fuel economy, that you're not doing anyway (you're doing 5k OCI's).
I don't know if Frank would approve this, but I'd almost suggest just doing Auto-Rx on every other OCI ..even at your 5k interval ..for an extended period of time.
I recently did my Jetta 1.8T. Decided on Syntec 5W40. Musta done something because my oil sump now taken about 1/2 quart more than it had been taking. Happened so slowly I hadn't really notice the drop. Gonna do another run this summer.
