Please do not believe the hype about motor oil's that can clean. There is one commercial out about a particular motor oil that says it cleans 46% more sludge than the other leading motor oil.
Motor Oil's do two things:
1) Lubricate parts 2) Cool parts
When I got my 1983 Chevrolet El Camino back in 1985 with 25,000 miles I started using Mobil 1 and changed the oil every 3000 miles.
At 200,000 miles I started using Amsoil and I changed the oil every 3000 miles again. You would think that using synthetic oil my engine should have been spotless, this was not the case. I fell under the belief that since I used synthetic oil my engine should be spotless.
At 340,000 miles I put on a different oil pump and a new oil pan, it took a while for the engine to build up oil pressure, my friend told me that I had some junk in the engine.
At 343,000 miles I started using auto-rx and I am happy to report that my engine is running much better now at 370,000 miles than it did at 343,000 miles.
My Dad drove my car yesterday, the last time he drove the car was when it had 300,000 miles on it. He jokingly told me that I must have gone out one night in the garage and put in a new engine.
I remeber when I saw that commercial I coudlnt stop laughing. So let me get this straight, it cleans 46% better than most motor oils, Whats 46% of 0 ? Thats how much it probably cleans.
Let's face it, if Motor Oil's could clean we would not need auto-rx. Next time you see a commercial where they claim that a certain motor oil can clean, then go out and by a bottle and get your hands real dirty and rub the oil through your hands too see if it will clean.
There's an off chance that you can stumble on to a different chemistry that will disrupt existing film formations ..but it's a hit and miss thing and it's very passive. Auto-Rx has much higher potency of assured metal bonding/cleaning components and can get the job done safely in the shortest period of time. If you do manage to find an oil that upsets existing residing film formations, it will be expensive and it will be a long term commitment to get the varied results. It too will have its own set of residuals over the long haul.
It's much more productive to reset the condition of the ring packs to clean ..then use the maintenance dose to eliminate any future formations. Every oil produces them eventually. Only the time line varies.
geeaea, basically we are saying that there is a 100% chance of us cleaning our engines using auto-rx, whereas with a motor oil that says it cleans we may not be sure of the results.
Most oils have gotten better at deposit control. Not much can stop some from occurring, especially in rings. Something like Red Line might do something with resident films ..but then you're dedicated to using a very expensive oil, and it too will eventually leave some leftovers that need to be removed.
None of them are anywhere near the potency of Auto-Rx in terms of attraction to metal surfaces. They would cost too much.
