transmission seal leak
Permalink

I just bought a used toyota echo automatic with 140k on it, and treated the engine oil and the transmission oil to an autorx treatment, per the instructions.

About 800 miles into the transmission treatment I developed a small seal leak right where the driver's side axle enters the transmission.  200 miles later I did a full replacement of the fluid.  Might the seal leak stop (like it did with the oil leak on my rear main seal, after ARX) at some point, or should I replace the seal now?  The leak is slow so I am inclined to wait a while just to see if it "heals", but I'm curious to know what to expect.  Thanks for a great product.

johnoh,

I would wait. My seal did not stop leaking for about 1000 miles that was 2 years ago. Thank you for using ARX.

I agree on waiting it out. See if it was being sealed by dirt or deformed by dirt.

Those seals aren't too bad on replacing time/$$$ wise ...but there's no reason to do it if you don't have to.

Has the fluid leak slowed or stopped yet?

The leak has stopped. The trans fluid is the Castrol Import Multi Vehicle. Here is the timeline:

142,200 - added arx to transmission
143,200 - replaced all trans fluid (12 qts) at home using gravity flush technique
144,000 - leak begins
147,000 - leak stopped
