I bought a Toyota PU from by father in-law . When he bought it with only 95 ,000 and it had 115,000 when i got it from him .IT now has 130,000 on it . He only drove it once or twice a month . When i got it from him it had a broken thermostat and it would never warm up . He also did not believe in warming up anything ( It hurt his gas millage ) It uses a Qt of oil every 200-300 miles .When i got it , I had the timing chain replaced and had the valve stem seals replaced at the same time and that did nothing to slow the oils usage . I just ordered AutoRX to see if that does anything . I am hopping the oil rings are stuck from all the sitting it was doing while my father inlaw had it . This model is also know for having piston slap and if my he never warmed it up , i wounder if that damaged the cylinder walls . I alsway let it warm up to op temp before going anywhere , then there is NO piston slap . When i changed the plugs they were spotless , my truck runs GREAT and almost no smoke out the trail pipe , no oil leaks so i guess the catalytic converter must be doing a great job . If use the motor to hold me back on long steep down hills while 4 wheeling, then i get some smoke . I hate to have it re- built right now , it runs so good and is sooo quite but i hate oild burners !!
Yikes! I would suggest replacing (not just cleaning) the PCV valve. Have you adjusted the lifters? How much sludge / contaminent build up is there under the valve cover? Have you done a compression test?
The first thing i did was replace the PVC valve . I have no sludge build up and i also just had a new timing chain , head gasket and valve seals put in and the oil use is the same . . That was the first thing i did after i noticing the oil consumption . Blows me away how well it runs and that i have very very little smoke coming out the tail pipe , only after a very very steep and long down hill glide ( a mile or two or more ) I sure hope i have a stuck oil ring or two and Auto RX does the job .
Well my Toyota P/U oils use has dropped off a lot . I took it elk hunting today and did a lot of slow but high RPM driving in the hills of N. Utah and i just checked the oil and it used NONE today . Before it would have used a 1/2 a Qt . I only put around 75 miles on but i had the engine running at idle a lot , trying to keep warm . I noticed the oil use has been getting better and better . He is a photo of my clean 1985 Toyota . You can see why i was bummed that it used so much oil . I have new oil seals on the valves so it must be helping with the oil rings . I have around 500 miles on it since i put the Auto RX in . :) :) Also i have 75% off the radiator covered in very cold weather like this ,it helps keep it at good op temp . plus i though that might help with the cleaning faze . Otherwise even with a good thermostat and with the heater going full bore , the op temp will drop a lot . It was about 10 deg this morning at sunrise .
