1999 1.8 Passat Sludge buildup on pickup screen
Permalink

I have a 99 passat that I bought for my kid and it has become a money pit. The latest is the oil light comes on and off but car seems to run OK. My mechanic states that it might be a clogged pickup tube and would cost @ 2000 dollars to drop the pan and clean the screen. Will this addative be enough to clean the screen. I have been changing the oil more often and added an engine additive that the mechanic recommended, it looked like MMO but was a different name I do not recall. Thanks in advance for the feedback. I have had a couple experiences with a severely sludged engine with an oil light that goes on and off. Main thing is you want to SLOWLY break up and clean this sludge and I believe that Auto-Rx is the thing that can safely do that. On these engines, we ran the treatment for sludge, except that we ended up changing the oil filter twice as often at about 600-750 miles. After the first few hundred miles, the light stayed off. Just remember to use an appropriate oil and to get the oil good and hot with lots of flow and splash by taking it out on the highway for a good hot run. You will get the best results that way.

A good rule to follow is to change the filter when the oil light comes on. I'm uncertain how they set it up, but my old 504 Peugeot diesel would have the oil light come on when the filter was plugged. The engine was fine. The next years model had a "change filter" light in addition to the low oil pressure light.
