I have a tuned RB26 skyline which is a 2.6 straight six twin turbo running 550BHP. The engine has covered 78K, and 20K of these in this state of tune. The engine has only ever seen ester based synthetics in the last 8 years and is in fantastic condition inside the cam covers.
I wondered if auto-rx might be an effective way of de-coking my rings and turbos?? The car is not a daily driver and is only used as an adrenalin fix on nice sunny days, so does get pretty hard use although it is always warmed up and cooled down properly before it sees any boost at all, and as I say runs on the most exotic synthetics available.
Is there anyway of using auto-rx in my vehicle? I will not put mineral oils into it and as I say am only doing maybe 2000 miles per year in it?? Is there a way of using auto-rx for my specific requirements?? A fast rinse??
Cleaning of the ring packs takes a relatively short period of time, about 500 miles. If you change your oil but once a year I would add ARX at the time you next change your oil and filter. Use your vehicle as you normally would, and use the oil and filter of your choice.
There are all kinds of products that claim to be ester oils. Some are PAO based with percentages of esters added. There are some fully ester based oils, products like Red-Line come to mind that are polyol ester based and generally regarded as a great oil for road and track. There are other diester oils that are for the track only and are designed for short use say for a couple trips down the strip running nitro methane, or running alcohol fuel in a 500 mile race. The biggest problem with most ester oils is that they love to absorb moisture.
I would think that Turbo Jim is giving you good advice. What is it that makes you think that your rings are coked up? Turbos? Perhaps with all that forced intake you are suffering from fuel dilution preventing as stong an oil film on the cylinder bores as when the exotic oil is fresh.
Turbo Jim is correct, in that ARX works pretty darn fast in the coked ring department. You might want to consider running a small maintenance dose of ARX with each oil fill to help keep rings free.
Thanks for the replies guys. Not sure if anything is coked up TBH, just want to make sure things are as clean as possible. The engine has been running red line oil and most recently has switched to silkolene pro-s.
So would it be ok to add the auto-rx to the silkolene? A full bottle and just use it as I have been?? I'm changing the oil this weekend.
The oil does seem to go black pretty quick after a change.
ARX can be used with any motor oil. There are many reasons for a oil to turn color. Color in itself is not a good indicator of how much life is left in the oil. Only oil analysis can give you the heads up on that.
From what I can find, the Silcoline pro-s is a PAO and ester blend, beyond that it quite proprietary, but claims to have excellent protection for high performance valve trains. I would think that Auto-Rx would supplement this oil greatly by even just running the maintenance dose with each oil change.
