Why Not To Run Original Transmission Fluid Past Time To Change
Permalink

Hi, your product sounds very fascinating but in spite of your very informative site I have a question. Would it be harmful to add Auto-Rx to the transmission of my 1993 Ford Taurus with about 125k miles on it  and not change the transmission oil? I'm pretty sure it has never been changed and am leery of doing it now or do you think my concern is unwarranted given the cleaning properties of your product?
Thank you for your attention to this matter

Dear XXXX

By continuing to run the likely original transmission fluid, you are likely headed toward transmission failure as likely weak link in your drive train. Sooner or later it is likely that you will be replacing the transmission or rebuilding at some point, if you keep the current path. Auto-Rx is not harmful to any seals and will slowly dissolve any varnish deposits that are likely growing in this older unit. It is your call. The Auto-Rx treatment is the least likely to give you any trouble in getting this unit back up to par, from a cleanliness perspective. Unless you are a do it yourselfer the cost of a fluid exchange itself is about 100 bucks. The cost of a bottle of Auto-Rx is 27 bucks, of which you will only use 6 fluid ounces or a half bottle. Questions you must ask yourself is how long do you plan to run this 1993 unit. Does it have other issues that are in need of repair, such as front end parts, ball joints or struts. In my estimation if you are planning on running this unit upwards towards the 200K mark, you will need to service this transmission to prevent failure. Are there any shifting issues or overdrive chatter present now?

To merely change out the fluid without doing an Auto-Rx treatment might be a mistake. If you are serious about keeping the car by all means start the ARX process yesterday. All you would need to do is add 6 fluid ounces or 1/2 bottle to the existing fluid. Operate the car normally for 1000 to 1500 miles and then have the ATF fluid replaced. The other thing that you might want to consider is the poer steering unit. If that is original fluid, then it definitely needs service. Just add  one fluid ounce to the power steering reservoir and drive for 1000 miles before changing out the fluid.
