No problems until yesterday when my son was driving it back to school. After two hours of driving his oil pressure instantly dropped and the Stop car light came on. Had it towed to a gas station and they couldn't find anything wrong. She changed the oil and filter assuming it was a faulty filter. Two hours into his drive from the station the same thing happend again. Checked oil and it was fine, kept driving 50 miles to school with light on but car ran fine no knocking or any smells and temperature gauge stayed fine. How can auto-rx help me and how do I apply it for my sons car?

While you're waiting for your order of Auto-Rx to arrive.....

My first suggestion is to substitute the oil filter the engine has now for a Motorcraft FL-1A or equivalent. The reason being is that the typical oil filter spec'd for the 1.8T can restrict oil flow by up to 30 psi because of it's higher pressure-relief setting. The Motorcraft FL-1A is spec'd for the pressure relief valve to open between 8-11 psi.

For the engine to survive, and for Auto-Rx to work, you need adequate oil flow.  This is the reason for the filter change.  After the treatment is complete you can go back to using the type of filter normally recommended for this engine.

A more serious problem with regard to oil flow can be a oil pump pick-up screen that is plugged.  This will require that the oil pan be dropped and the pick-screen cleaned out or replaced.  Some have also opted to change the oil pump at this same time as long as they've gone that far.

It's unknown at this time if you will need to service the pick-up screen.   I just wanted to mention that it may be needed to restore proper oil flow and pressure.

Here is a write up of how complicated it is to service the PCV system on the 1.8T.  Unfortunately a clogged up PCV system can cause sludge so it needs to be serviced now and again.  In this case NOW would be a good time to service it.

Once Auto-Rx is in the engine it will slowly disolve built up oxidized contaminent, restoring the engine's oil flow, and allowing for proper lubrication.

Instructions for the various Auto-Rx applications can be found here
