Well I just got my oil changed and added a bottle of auto-rx, the car has around 163k. I will be following the "heavy sludge" application for this car. So far so good, I will keep updating this thread as the miles add up. Iam pretty sure my car needs at least 3 applications to be completely sludge free.
The oil was changed at Walmart, 5w-30 supertech as recccomended.

I havent actually, but walmart is only a couple of minutes away so I should be ok. I did have a question however, when i change the filter, is there any oil that needs to be replaced? I have never replaced just by it self.

It depends on your oil filter and how it is mounted, if it is mounted verticaly, meaning up and down yes, but if it is mounted horizontaly maybe not, the best thing too do is when you change your oil filter, start the car up and run it for a minute or so and then shut the car off, let it sit for a while and then check the oil level, another way is too change your oil filter and have a container underneath the oil filter as you take it off and see how much oil is in there, you can measure this by having an empty oil bottle and then pour the old oil from the filter into the empty oil bottle too see how much fills up, hope this helps you out.

There will always be some oil trapped in the filter when you take it off, no matter how the filter is positioned.

It will never be more than a half quart or so on this vehicle. So simply change the filter (make sure you put some oil on the o-ring), start the car, after the oil pressure comes up, turn it off, wait a couple of minutes, check the oil on the dipstick. Then top off just as if you were adding oil on a normal oil check.

Thanks guys,
I have noticed an oil leak problem with this car, it normally happens after every oil change but after a few weeks it goes away. I am not sure what is causing this but it seems to go away after the oil has burned off. Only 25 miles into the clean phase so far,I plan on changing the filter at around 700 miles or so.

Quick update,
Engine: So far I am about 1200 miles into the cleaning phase and just replaced the oil filter, while I could not open the oil filter and see its contents, the oil that came out of the filter was relatively dark.
Another thing that really surprised me was that the oil dipstick is actually getting cleaner, the "F" and "E" marks that are engraved on the dip stick are starting to turn silver again.
Gas Milage: There is definitely been an improvement in gas milage, I used to average around 19-20.5mpg and now am getting a constant 21.77 to 21.90mpg.
Transmission: I also added 5 oz of auto rx into the tranny, I know the dosage is for 6oz but I somehow mis calculated it and added 5 only. I am going to drive it for around 1500miles followed by a amsoil flush. The transmission shifts are slightly better, I expect them to get much smoother once I do the flush.
So far so good.

After driving the car 2500 miles and having changed out the oil filter around 3 times during the cleaning phase I finally got the oil changed. What I have learned so far from this experience is that every time the car does not feel as "smooth" as it should, it is time to change the oil filter. During the rinse phase I will be changing out filters much more often.

The fluid has already been flushed via t-tech, i forgot to mention it here. But I had 5 oz and drove it for around 1700 miles and flushed it with Amsoil synthetic fluid. Not much difference in shifting, the hard 1-2 shift still exists and after talking to brent, he said that I might have to drop the pan and clean it because there might be alot of sludge/contaminants floating around in there.

Quick update:
I am 1000 miles into the 1st rinse phase and while the oil on the dip stick does not seem dark, whenever I change out the oil filter, it seems to be pretty dark. I have also noticed that I need to change out my oil filter ever 500 miles or so, the car does not seem to run as "smooth" as it normally does. So far I have changed out 2 oil filters, the air filter was also replaced.

It sounds like you are getting a lot of junk out of the engine, if you have not changed your PCV in awhile meaning if it has been on more than 1 year it might be a good idea to change it.

To be honest with you I dont even know when the pcv valve was changed, Iam going to look into that. I know these engines are known for their sludge build up, I think im going to go with 3 clean/rinse phases, which will be alot of miles (16500) but at least I will have the cleanest engine around.

another quick update:
ever since I have been changing out my oil filter at around 450-500 miles or so the car has been running INCREDIBLY smooth. I know this has to do with the fact that there is alot of junk in that engine and that a single oil filter can only hold so much. So for those of you who are on the clean/ rinse phase I highly recommend changing out your oil filter ever time the motor does not feel "smooth". This is just my opinion, but other members and I have had the same results by changing out the oil filter frequently.

Have you cut open your oil filters, have they been heavy, meaning that there is so much junk in the pleats that oil is trapped inside the filter.

Havent cut open the filters, I dont have the tools to do that. But the oil that is contained within in the filter is much darker than what appears on the dip stick.

All you need is a hacksaw and some mechanics gloves, the reason I mention the mechanics gloves is if the hacksaw slips which it will do when some oil comes out you do not cut yourself, the other thing you can do is punch a hole in the bottom of the oil filter to let some oil drain out.

another quick update
1800 miles into the rinse phase and just replaced the oil filter again, I think the last time I changed this was about every 500 miles or so. The interval between changing filter was longer because the car did not feel 'sluggish" as it normally did every 400-500miles. I can only assume this might be due to the fact that by changing out the filters often I am getting rid of all the junk that is in the engine. So far so good!

Changed out the oil filter again, this time at around 500 miles(2400 miles into the rinse), as always it made the car run real smooth.

Second Clean Phase
After 2800 miles into the rinse phase, i changed the oil and this time instead of 12oz I added 18oz, since the crank holds 5.7qts of fluid, I want to see the effects of 3oz per quart would be instead of the 2qt per oz. Changed the oil with Walmart Super Tech 5w-30. So far So good

I got the oil changed at walmart, but last time i had changed the filter which around 400 miles prior to the oil change, it was very dark. The car is running VERY smooth now with the new oil and 18oz of auto-rx

I think it is best if you change the oil and oil filter so you can see how things are really going, just my opinion.

Based on your results so far, I would recommend a second cleaning and rinse, before going on to the maintenace dose with each oil change.

Perhaps I mispoke, after you finish this second rinse, be sure to run the maintenace dose with each oil change. It is advised that you do check or replace the PCV.

Since these motors are prone to sludging, I was thinking of running a 3rd clean/ rinse phase just to be sure. I havent been able to take the valve cover off either.

Update: Changed out the oil filter again at 2300 miles into the 2nd rinse phase. I did this because previously I had used a cheap "advance auto parts" oil filter which was not upto my standards. It took forever to get that filter off. I replaced it with "Fram" which seems to work good. The car now runs much smoother and the filter seems to be doing its job.

You need to get 1 of those cap oil filter wrenches which are about $6.00, and all you have to do is attach it to a ratchet or a 3/8 breaker bar.

Hey brent, I have that wrench, its just that the filter was total garbage, I have never had such issues with a filter. Oh well, I learned my lesson. So to all those out there...stay away from "Advance auto parts" oil filters

I have use the red, textured AA oil filter, which is really just a Purolator. They seem to be fine for all for the cars we have used them in for up to 7000 miles. What kind of problems were you having? I've always thought of them as better quality then the Fram filters, especially with metal end caps instead of resin/fiberboard end caps. I am not really trying to get any Fram bashing started here.

When I was going through the Clean and Rinse Phases I too had a hard time getting my oil filters off, I think it has something to do with the liquified junk going to the oil filter and getting on the threads where the oil filter screws on.

Were you trying to get it off after the engine has been running ?

It was a real pain to remove the filter, even with the wrench, which did not help because it ended up stripping the filter so it kept on loosing its grip. It was the red one.

No, this was something different that I did this time. Maybe thats what caused the filter to get stuck the way it did.

Yes I was probably trying to get the oil filter off after the engine was running since I like to change the oil when it is hot. This may mean there was some pressure still inside the oil filter.

Once the Oil Filter is hot the metal rim expand, hence why it is difficult to remove and usually seal the rim with engine oil to stop it sticking.

I use a light hammer and a long old screwdriver to hit it through the old oil filter for a better hand grip or to tap on the screwdriver to remove.

This is what I do, from a overnight stone cold engine, I unscrew the Oil Filter and Sump Plug so that I can easily remove it while it is hot.

03/16/09 3rd Clean phase:

The car now has 175392 miles, all check engines lights are gone. I could have gone with the maintanence dose, but I thought why not go for one more clean phase/rinse phase.
The car is running smooth, gas milage is still around 20mpg.  Everthing is looking good.

I take it that you have done 2 Clean and Rinse Phases, and now you are going to do another Clean and Rinse.

I would have just went to the Maintenance Dose, it sounds like everything has been cleaned out.

Did you ever get around too changing your PCV Valve or at least check the PCV hose.

What brand of oil are you using right now.

Hey Brent,
Since I know these engines are prone to sludging and I dont know who the previous owner was for the 1st 136k miles, I might has well do one last clean/ rinse phase and continue with the 4oz maintenance dose.
Havent gotten to the PCV valve yet, I got the oil change done at Firestone and they used "Kendell' oil.

You need to get to that PCV Valve and at the least get your PCV hoses checked.

Maybe everything is fine, but a PCV Valve that is slowly going bad can lead too problems down the road.

How long was the Check Engine light on? Was it a long period of time?
