I have a '99 Corolla with 103,000 miles on it. I live in the South and the engine has been through 90+ degree heat every year during the summer. I have always used conventional oil and it has been changed on a consistent basis. I have never had any leaks and my car is around 29 mpg in city driving. I think it can do better than that and there looks to be some buildup when I took the oil cap off. Also, the engine doesn't feel as smooth as it used to. I am moving up north later this year and I expect temps to be below 20 F on a regular basis, so I'd like to use a synthetic oil come winter.
1) What application would you suggest? Basic or Sludge? I plan on using Valvoline Conventional for this.
2) If a second application is suggested, is it ok to use conventional oil in the first application and a group III synthetic in the second application? By winter I would like to have synthetic oil in my engine and a second application would likely go into winter time.
3) For maintenance plan, is it ok to use a high mileage oil such as Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic? Or should I shy away from that and use a group III without additives?
The most important part of the Auto-Rx process requires product for the maintenance program. Purchasing only two bottles for sludge issues makes this necessary application impossible. PS Your engine needs to be treated for sludge , group 111 oil is fine year round. Synthetic is not for sludge issues. Sludge is a 3 bottle application.
If you feel that there is some build up, just go for the "heavy sludge application" to be on the safe side. Although you can use synthetic oil for the cleaning phase, do no use it for the rinse phase. Use regular dino oil for that. Once you are on the maintenance plan you can use synthetic oils with no problem. But it is preferred that you use regular dino (e.g. super tech oil at walmart) to completed the cleaning/rinse phase.
