Replacing Oil pump/pikup?? Worth the effort?- New customer to ARX
Permalink

I have just purchased a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8T (Turbo) motor. (This motor has a very bad sludge problem and causing many engine failures.)

My car has 66K miles on it and has been normally maintained. I have not seen any oil lights or noticed any oil related problems as of yet. There is a noticable build up of sludge on the oil filler cap, however.

I just ordered 3 btls of ARX to use in a few days.

Would it make sence for me to remove the oil pan and replace/clean the oil uptake tube on the pump? Its a pretty basic proceedure as best I can tell, and thought it might be very well worth it considering the damage that could occur should this fail.

Would this action be overkill at this point, or will ARX will be sufficient? Is coked oil the same as sludge?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

I would let Auto-Rx Chemistry do it,s job. Please print out application for "Sludge" from www.auto-rx.com and follow application as stated. If after you have completed the Auto-Rx Application and still think you need to
phsically clean itrms above do so . Oil sludge and coked oil same VW likes ****ed oil name for sludge.

Thanks Frank.
Ordered Auto-RX yesterday and look forward to giving it a try.
I pulled the oil pan last night (pretty simple procedure on my model) and the intake screen was 50% clogged w. hard coked sludge-a-magoo.
So, ARX will be a great addition to this cleaning process.
Will also use on my 97 Tahoe w/ 197K miles on it.

Will keep the board posted as to results.

Sincerely,
Pat

Patmac, just take the slow and easy route and have patience. Snap some images of the screen and pan (before adding if possible) and then do it again in 10k+. Follow the instructions to the letter and I'm sure you will be pleased with the results.

Great idea... Will do so and post here.

I took the action to pull the pan last night simply b/c of the history of this motor and my lack of traceability of the previous service history.

Had I let it go and clogged the pickup, the motor would of been damaged severely. So, I took the less risky approach and cleared the plumbing and will let the ARX do the rest of the motor. I figured 50 bucks and 3 hrs time was a good investment and risk/reward.

At least I now know the pickup and pan are clean from sludge...helps me sleep at night.

Thanks again for the reply.
