I have a friend that comes over to get his oil changed on his truck, it has the oil life monitor on it, I started changing the oil for him at 36,000 miles and now the engine has 84,000 miles. When I 1st started changing his oil he could go about 6500 miles between oil changes and as time went on it dropped down to about 5500 miles, he was complaining about not getting more miles out of an oil change and also said the truck did not have the get up and go like it did when he got it. He called me up and said it is time to change the oil and he wanted to try Auto-Rx, I am happy to report that 500 miles into the clean phase he is noticing a smoother running engine and the truck is more responsive, he drives a lot so he should be back at my place buy early to mid August to do an oil change at which time he will then be on the Rinse Phase. It will be interesting too see how much more he can go as far as mileage between oil changes after the Clean and Rinse Phase is over. I will keep everyone posted on his results.
That's what I am wondering too and my friend hopes that after the Clean and Rinse Phases are over he can get more miles out of an oil change. My thinking is that if you have some junk in your engine it will get the oil dirty quicker, just my thoughts. I am not 100% sure how OLM's work but I have heard that they work well in determining when the oil is done. In my opinion the cleaner an engine is the more miles you can go before an oil change.
According to Honda, their OLM is determined by an internal algorithm, which considers the engine starting temperature, driving distance and engine RPM. The onboard computer also judges your driving conditions and habits, and then calculates the remaining engine oil life, displaying it as a percentage.
No OLM actually samples the oil and gives a reading. It makes an educated guess, therefore Auto-RX would have no effect on it.

I am happy to report again that my friend is 1300 miles into the Clean Phase and is noticing that his engine with 86,000 miles now has almost as much power as it did at 36,000 miles, his results should be interesting after the Rinse Phase gets done.
My friend came over and we changed his oil, it was at the 2700 mile mark, the oil was very dark and the oil filter after it was drained had some weight too it. Ironically his oil life monitor read almost 70%, normally by this time it is between 50% and 60%, he comments that the truck keeps running better and better. We will see how things go during the rinse phase and what the oil and filter look like after 3000 miles.
If you really want to try an run extended drain intervals like the 6500 miles on the 03 GMC, first get the motor cleaned out with a cleaning and rinse. Afterall this is an especially long oil change interval for dino. If he uses the truck for hauling loads or trailoring then it is likely way to long. Each time you change the oil the minimal detergent/dispersant package in the motor oil gets depleted real fast because it working on deposits left behind from the previous oil changes.
So step one is to clean and rinse the motor. Then run a maintenance dose with each oil change. Once cleaned, I would think 4500 miles is a good number with an inexpensive mineral oil(dino) with a three ounce maintenace dose would perform real well. If you want to run 6500 mile OCI's then run a group III with a maintenance dose in confidence.
He does not use the truck for any trailoring or heavy loads, but it is a 4-wheel drive. He is about 800 miles into the rinse phase and has reported that the oil pressure gauge is moving around, maybe some junk was on his oil pressure sensor and it is getting rinsed off. He is now saying when he hits the gas there is a momentary lull in power and then it takes off, but the truck has 87,000 miles and the spark plugs are original so it may be time for a change. I think his manual says to change the plugs at 100,000 miles. I will also have to get him to change his PCV.
Panthermike, he has not done a tuneup yet. I think he wants to change the oil 1st and see how things go, its his car and I told him whenever he is ready we can change his spark plugs.
We dumped the rinse oil today, it was dark, and the oil filter was heavy with junk. I have observed this before, when we poured in the new oil we could here it trickling down into the oil pan.
My friend says the car is running great, at 3000 miles his OLM was at 40%, so we know Auto-Rx did a serious job of rinsing the junk to the oil filter. He plans on running his dino oil another 3000 miles and then he will go onto the Maintenance Dose.
