I did an Auto-Rx cleaning in my trans at 346,000 miles and even though it went well I felt that as I got close to 360,000 miles that the trans needed a 2nd cleaning. The engine felt great but there was something lacking in the transmission shifting, almost like the trans was trying to catch up with the engine. I did something different this time when I added the 6 ounces, instead of just pouring it in, I started the car 1st and let it run for a minute, then I poured in the 6 ounces to get the Auto-Rx to flow through the system, the trans is shifting great and I am 200 miles into the cleaning and all is going well. I have to realize that at 360,000 miles I am into unchartered territory, it is probably unrealistic to expect that everything was cleaned out on the 1st treatment at 346,000 miles, that is a lot of miles for a transmission, I should be at the 1000 mile mark in early September. My Dad has a digital camera and I will try to post pictures of the old fluid versus the new fluid as well as taking a picture of the inside of the transmission pan.
I am 300 miles into the 2nd cleaning on the transmission and it is shifting fantastic, it will be interesting to see how the fluid and pan look when I get too 1000 miles.
I am about 800 miles into this cleaning and when I got home tonite I took a temp reading on the torque converter after a 50 mile run, some of it highway driving. The temp was 159 degrees, before it was usually 165 to 167 degrees when I took a temp reading, there is no doubt in my mind I made the right choice by doing a 2nd cleaning on this transmission.
I drained 6 quarts of trans fluid and saved it, I added 6 quarts of fresh fluid and drove the car around tonite, it was wet out so I did not get a good feel for how the tran's was running. The fluid was a little dark, I will be dropping the pan tommorow and I will see how things look. Sunday will be sunny in my area so I will get a chance to drive the car a little harder.
It's quite remarkable that your vehicle is running so well with that many miles. Not many engines and very few autotrans go that long without an overhaul.
It is, I dropped the pan on this 2nd cleaning and there was a little junk in the trans filter, the trans magnet I have had a little bit of stuff. What is really amazing is that this is a car with a carburetor and flat tappet camshaft, no roller cam or fuel injection.
