I have a 02 F-150 5.4L with 40k miles. I use Amsoil 5W20 year round. I want to use AutoRx to clean it out. I've read people use 0W20 year round synthetic. I'm not sure of what engine they have. I've decided on Pennzoil 0W20 to use this winter while doing a clean out. I drive so little it should be ready in the spring for an oil change. One day a week I drive 10 minutes and then drive back after sitting for an hour. The other 4 days are 26-43 mile round trips. After the clean and rinse cycles I intend on using 0W20 Amsoil with a maintenace dose for 25000 miles. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure where you are located, but do you really need a 0W-20 weight oil? For most areas, 5W-20 is sufficient and you can easily go ahead and use Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5W-20 for your ARX application. That is a Group III base. Hope this helps.
I'm around detroit in the suburbs. It's just I would like to see if the lighter weight oil will help with cold start up. I've run my oli changes for thousands of miles than I should have. I figure dirt may have got in there. It did only take a quart in 12000 miles though my friend said since he had to check/add oil then. I'm in better physical shape now and do a lot of my own work.
Maybe you should wait to do Auto RX until spring when you can use a 5W-20 conventional without worries?
I live on Montana and our winters are collllllllllddd, yet my family has been getting by with using 10W-30 in most of our vehicles. This will be my first winter with a 5W-20.
Auto RX works best when the oil gets hot and stays hot, and winter will prevent the oil temps from getting as high as they do during summer.
If you do still want to use Auto-RX durign the winter, there is nothing wrong with using the Motorcraft 5W-20 blend that I mentioned on BITOG.
Looks like I'll go see what wallyworld has then since the prices are the best in this area along with Murray's. I'm going to be winterizing the coolers so that will block some air and when snow hits I go play in it in 4x4. I want to try out my new front gears I had put in after finding the righ ratio in the rear.
No it hasn't till now. I ran across AutoRx in BITOG and from what I've read I would give it a try. I plan on running this vehicle 2-3 hundred thousand miles so the cleaner the better. I have about 40k on it and have had it since it was new.
