I have a 2003 Jetta with the 1.8T engine with about 100K miles on it. I have NOT been religious about my oil changes every 5K (or really 3K as I have been reading lately) and the last time, it had gone up to 8K before I changed it. *Go ahead, I'm an idiot and don't deserve pity* Now I have read all of this stuff about my engine's knack for generating sludge and I just want to get it cleaned out so I can get myself onto a maintenance plan.
The oil pressure light had come on when I got to my last oil change and I was hearing a clicking coming out of the engine. After the oil change, I drove about 10 miles and the light was on again and the clicking was back. I brought it to a mechanic who told me I had major sludge buildup - he did a flush and another oil change. That was last week.
Since then, the oil pressure light has come on again at the end of my ~20 mile trip to work, after getting off the highway. I tried taking backroads one day and the light never came on. The clicking noise is gone and has not come back.
I ordered Auto-RX last week when this happened and it showed up today. I just put about 8 oz in and took a very short drive and the oil pressure light came on again.
Should I expect this to get better and ride it out or should I do an oil change or even another flush and THEN do the Auto-RX cleaning cycle?
Well, I had seen a minor improvement early on, but since then, I've still been seeing the oil light every day at least a couple times on the way to work. Killing the engine cleared the condition and I could drive another 10 minutes or so. This was getting old fast, so doing some more research, I learned that the most likely cause is excessive sludge in the oil uptake tube - this draws the oil from the oil pan and has a screen at the top which gets clogged up. Killing the engine allowed the oil to drain back into the pan and cleared the clog.
I decided to take it to a mechanic this week and have him replace that uptake tube, which requires dropping the oil pan. He confirmed for me that it was pretty much clogged up and he also removed the valve cover and cleaned out what he could from there. I'll get it back today and with any luck, I'm done with this problem now.
Is this a common design? It sounds to me like I have an oil filter inside my engine that is not designed to be replaced.
In any case, I do plan to start right away on an Auto-RX maintenance plan.
Nearly every engine has some type of rudimentary, coarse screen that is located at the bottom of the oil pump intake tube. The screen is really only there just to keep the pump from sucking in something that would damage it. With normal oil changes and engine conditons, this screen should never need cleaned or become restricted. But when oil change intervals go too long or poor engine design degrades oil faster than normal, this oil pick-up screen can eventually become clogged with sludge, preventing the oil from being sucked up into the pump fast enough or at all. Damage occurs rather fast after that happens.
Sounds like you did the right thing to get it cleaned it up and replace the pick-up tube/screen. Let us know how it goes with the maintenance plan.
I would stick to fairly short OCI's with the maintenance dose installed for the first couple anyways. There will be plenty more contaminants being dissolved for the next couple oil changes.
