Maintenance dose still 4oz? Maintain seals with syn oil
Permalink

The maintenance is now 4 oz  correct?  It is not mentioned under the maintenance plan.  Maybe somewhere else?

And I see that it mentions leaks could start again when using syn oil after seal leak procedure.  Is this still just as possible while running the maintenance dose with the syn oil.

Seal leak and sludge application both caution about using synthetic -semi synthetic-high mileage oil. In engines where there has been seal leak or sludge build up.

Where there has been seal leak do not use Auto-Rx Maintenance Dose until leak has been stopped for some time.

In sludge issues use 4 ounces of Auto-Rx each OCI as maintenance amount.

All other maintenance doses are 3 ounces per OCI

This is on a friends car that I'm working on.

Frank could you clarify on this: "Where there has been seal leak do not use Auto-Rx Maintenance Dose until leak has been stopped for some time".

She wants to run extended changes on PAO synthetic oil. I want to seal up the leak on the front seal. I will run a 3 oz maintenance dose and hope for the best.

Your friend needs to understand her choice of oil will only exacerbate her leak. Don't waste the Auto-Rx.

Some engines are just too high mileage seal-wise to run a extended oci on a PAO synthetic. You will know if you try, because you may go broke trying to keep the oil level full! Consider this idea, if your seal leak does not ever stop and you are done with all your clean and rinse cycles, try Maxlife oil. This is what I did on our high mileage chevy 305 and it all but stopped some major leak issues that would require lots of repair work that I do not have time or desire to do on that car. I am using 10W-40 ML with maintenance dose ARX, and it is really doing the job.

BMW Tech Guy that is new and exciting information about the MaxLife. Is 10W-40 the choice viscosity? and what is the maintenance dose 3 or 4 ounces of Auto-Rx?

This is the major reason why the Auto-Rx Discussion board was created.

Could she run Group III syn oil with a maintenance dose? I might replace the seal at some point.

I used 10W-40 Maxlife in this Caprice engine since it still gets rather cold here at times in the winter. I changed the oil back in January after trying non-synthetic oil for many miles, trying to get the leaks to stop, even 20W-50 in the summer. I then went with 4 oz maintenance dose with this latest oil change using Maxlife. I had to add one quart in the first 1000 miles, meaning the leaking already dropped to about half in the first 1000 miles. The next 2000 miles only required about 1 quart of make-up oil, meaning oil leaking has been further reduced to one-fourth what it was before. So, I know Maxlife works in this ole chevy 305. I don't think that this engine burns any oil to speak of. It really needs the engine pan dropped, cleaned and re-sealed, along with the front and rear main seals. But we have been so busy, there is not much time to work on our own stuff.

I actually had a Benz/BMW owner/customer/friend here and we had the hood open on the old chevy with the engine running and he could not get over how quiet the ole chevy was just idling there, with 262k miles on the clock, all original powertrain. (I was "selling" him on the idea that we should ARX all his cars.) I think over the years I have done 3 or 4 complete clean/rinse cycles as this engine was severely sludged when we got it at 130k miles with several lifters a 'tappin. Very poor oil change history and completely plugged (carboned up) PCV vacuum port at TB base. Car is now quiet, smooth, and power is very good for an 18 year old engine. Even fuel economy is decent for a big car like this. I like this size car for my wife and kid to drive around in. It provides a lot more intrusion protection than a Camry or other, smaller, modern car. He sits in the middle of the back seat in his carseat, so he's in a safe place I feel. They were hit pretty badly in our previous old Lesabre which got totaled, and neither was hurt. My wife did bang her head a bit on the door frame top, but it was just a bump. Car had 268k miles on original engine and it was quiet and no leaks or consumption after several ARX cycles and maintenance dose. I did replace the engine oil pan gasket and 2 engine/transaxle mounts a couple months before the accident. We loved that car. It got better than 30 mpg's on the road at times!

She wants to run a synthetic and run longer intervals.   I might end up replacing the Balancer seal at some point.
