I just bought a 95 toyota t100 4x4 truck with 168,000 miles on it. The only oil leak I have on it is the valve covers, which is a known issue.  I do not think I have a sludge problem, but do not know for sure. What treatment plan do you think I should use for it? The truck requires 5w30. What brand oil suggestions do you guys have for it? I am not sure of what has been used in the truck in the past..  Thanks!

To discover if you have sludge remove oil fill cap and turn upside down if you have spaghetti type gray oily strands around grooves you have sludge. Print out application for sludge and follow as outlined.

If no sludge print out standard application and follow for engines over 100,000 miles.

Stay with the manufactures recommended viscosity and oil for sludge application calls for no synthetic-semi synthetic or high mileage.

Regular cleaning Castrol GTX or Pennzoil in the yellow bottle work well.

You will have a very good look at the top end of your motor when you change out those valve cover gaskets. Normally at that mileage two cleanings are typically required. Clean, then rinse, clean then rinse.

Chose a conventional oil for all phases. Stay away from high mileage oils and full synthetics, during the cleaning and rinsing application.

Since the truck is new to you I would change out the PCV valve and the fuel filter to be on the safe side. As Richone has pointed out once you take off the valve cover's you'll have a good idea how clean or dirty the motor is on the inside.

I had a couple people tell me to run the auto-rx before changing the valve cover gaskets..  I plan on changing the fuel filter asap, but the threads on the fuel lines are notorious for stripping out, getting messed up, so I am debating paying the dealer to change it.. no  Always do my own work, but i have heard horror stories on the t100 fuel filter change..  I will check out the inside of my fill cap.

epe,

You can ARX before changing the valve cover gasket but ARX may or may not stop the leak.
