Rotella 5w40 Group III?

Is Rotella 5w40 CJ4 oil group III, IV or a blend of the two?  Also, if it's group III, can it be used for the AutoRX clean and rinse phases or is group II oil still preferred?

Thanks,

Rob

If its group 111 it will be fine. Someone else will have answer regarding group IV or a blend.

You should be able to go to the Rotella website and be able to check out if the oil is a Group II oil, I think it is best to use Wal-Mart Super Tech dino oil for both phases.

Yep. RTS 5w-40 uses Shell's XHVI proprietary Group III base stock. The only reason you would NOT want to use it is if you feel you can use a cheaper product (like a 15w-40) for the short time you're going to have it in service.

I'd use RTS 5w-40 if I was nervous with a BMW/MB/AUDI/etc (Euro-alloy that typically spec's a 5w-40 synth). I wouldn't worry about the ACEA alphabet soup numbers, nor the lack of VW501.xx/MB229.xxx.xxx.xxx or any of the other stuff, since you're not taxing any of the fuel economy or other non-durability criteria that those oils have to meet.

That all said, I would have no problem using a 15w-40 in my BMW/MB/AUDI/VW since I'm not the nervous type.

2500-3000 miles? Many oils work just fine.

Well it looks like Rotella is a blend of group III & IV based on the MSDS:

"Blend of synthetic hydrocarbon, polyalphaolefins and additives. The highly refined mineral oil contains <3% (w/w) DMSO-extract, according to IP346.

Oh well, I can always use it after the AutoRX treatments are complete...
