I've been using Auto-Rx in my engine and tranny, but didn't consider putting it into the transfer until I noticed a transfer seal leak a few days ago. The transfer holds about 0.8 quarts of gear oil in the range of 75W-90 to 90 weight. I'm not sure what is in there now, since I can't find any records on this and the shop manual simply says 75W-90, 80W-90, and 90 weight gear oil are okay. Given the age and mileage of the car (1988, 202000 miles), I assume that it is a dino-based oil and not synthetic, and that probably the seal to the propeller shaft is leaking because of age.
I've read the older posts on transfer application, but none mention a transfer seal leak, so I have two questions:
1) Does Auto-Rx show the same metal-cleaning, seal-cleaning abilities on transfer case seals as it does on engine seals? I realize that if the seal is torn, then Auto-Rx won't help, but I'm sure the transfer could use a good cleaning.
2) Can I replace the transfer gear oil with synthetic gear oil or should I stick to dino oil just like preferred oil with the engine application? I am asking this question with regards to renewed leaks. The engine applications for Auto-Rx strongly recommend continuing to use dino oil instead of synthetic to minimize future leaks.
