I got the chance to run the test Rich posted about the oil drainback and this area seems to be very restricted on the car, took around 40 mins for the oil to drain back into the sump after running her for a few minutes.

Hi, I have emailed the technicalarx account a few days ago but thought i'd post this question up also.
We have a 2003 E39 525i BMW, it is a high mileage vehicle, currently 215k miles and is used as a airport transfers car. It therefore spends most of its time on the highways cruising at 70mph.
This vehicle consumes around 1 quart of oil every 150 miles, extreme oil usage. I have started the heavy oil burner schedule on the instructions list at auto-rx.com but I wanted some advice with this level of usage, should we be topping the auto-rx up along with the oil during the clean phase, bearing in mind just how much oil this engine consumes?
Joe have you done a compression test on this engine? With oil consumption this high I'm wondering if you don't have broken rings or some other mechanical issue.
Hi Jim, thanks for the reply. We've done a compression test, all but cylinder 1 are within spec, cylinder 1 is just outside of spec but I think this will improve after auto-rx has done its work.
My concern is that the drainback holes are plugged with sludge, meaning the oil is staying in the upper parts of the engine and being burned off. Auto-rx in these circumstances will struggle to do its thing I think.

I agree. You may need to physically clear out the oil return holes.
